When dogs suffer from flea allergy dermatitis, they become sensitive to the flea's saliva once they bite the dog's skin. Dogs that suffer from flea allergy will then show signs of itching, redness, or swelling. When the fleas inflict the first stage of attack, it is actually the dogs themselves that cause more damage to themselves. As soon as the itching starts, it is the dogs' initial reaction to scratch the itchy part of their body or areas bitten by the flea.

Whether your pet came from a shelter or not ongoing care and attention to their health is as impoartant for them as it is for you. Parasitic infections are natural phenomena and parasites are pretty ingenious about finding and getting into their hosts. Periodic trips to the vet along with routine examination by the owners at home, attention to cleanliness in the kennels, and good nutrition will go a long way to keeping you, your pets and your kids free from parasites.

These are all really true! I just got a dog from the APL and before we went there we drove around to a few of the local animal shelters and a few of them did not meet all of these guidelines. They were not a bad shelter, but I felt much more confident getting a dog from a shelter I knew I could trust. It’s important also to make sure new dogs have been de-wormed properly when they're from a shelter or rescue center. Make sure they check for tape-worm as that can be past along by fleas...even if the dog has been treated and protected from fleas. Best of all – make sure they let the dogs/cats have some personal time and play time! It’s especially important to get this personal time when the animal is in a shelter.
