The Forgotten Dog’s Christmas Poem

Everyone take heed…and please pass this around to everyone thinking of getting a puppy or dog this holiday season…

Twas the night before Christmas
when all thru the house
Not a creature was stirring
not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St. Nick soon would be there.
The children all nestled snug in their beds
With no thought of the dog filling their head.
And mom in her kerchief and I in my cap
Knew the dog was cold, but didn’t care about that.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash
Figuring the dog was free of his chain and into the trash.
The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow
gave the luster of mid-day to objects below.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But Santa Clause with his eyes full of tears.
He unchained the dog once so lively and quick
Last year’s Christmas present now painfully sick.
More rapid than eagles he called the dog’s name
and the dog ran to him despite all his pain.
Now Dasher, now Dancer, now Prancer and Vixen
On Comet on Cupid on Donner and Blitzen.
To the top of the porch to the top of the wall
Let’s find this dog a home where he will be loved by all.
I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year
For Santa had made one thing quite clear.
The gift of a dog is not just for the season
We had gotten the dog for all the wrong reasons.
In our haste to think of the kids a gift
There was one important thing we missed
A dog should be family, and cared for the same
You don’t give a gift, then put it on a chain.
And I heard him explain as he rode out of site,
“You weren’t given a gift, you were given a life.”

By the way Pet Land is selling Yellow Lab puppies for $900 b/c of the movie Marley and Me. They are giving people the option to come pick them up on Christmas. So, get ready come June we are going to have A LOT of yellow labs in rescue. BOOOOO!!

This is amazing and sad but true. So many animals get bought as xmas presents for kids and then suffer for their entire lives after they are not babies anymore. thank you for posting this important message.
I think this is really important for people to read, especially at the holidays. Thats sad about petladn, in 9 mopnths shelters are goona be masxed out with yellow labs… so sad
You may have a wonderful approach of putting things into viewpoint.
a dog is not a gift to give but a life to cherish for the rest of his/her life, purebred, rescue doesn’t matter, when you get a pet either a cat or dog there is no reason what so ever to give it away or abandoning it. People got to start taking responsibility for their actions, if your child wants a pet but you don’t guess what dont get a pet. Simple don’t get one, who is the parent you or your child…. Please please think before getting a pet for your child, you r the one who would be taking care of it not your child. As for beoming pregnant and now you have to get rid of your cat or dog? Why? Then you should of never gotten the pet in the first place. Having a pet is a lifetime committment regardless if you gotten pregnant after or not. moving and new apartment does not allow pets, simple don’t move into that apartment there are other apartments out there that do allow pets, ok maybe it’s is not a nice apartment but wouldn’t it either be ok until you find another? I’m sorry I would never get rid of my dogs I would live in a crummy apartment that allows dogs until I find better one that will accept dogs. Also don’t have enough time? hmmm do you visit friends? What do you do go over their house watch movies etc, bring your dog along, all they want to do is spend time with you. I’m sorry as you can see I can go on and on.
