Please Welcome Franklin, Frank N’ Beans Smith
I hope all of our bloggie friends can leave some messages of encouragement and support, and give a big warm welcome to the newest member of the family, Franklin the Basset Hound, aka Frank N’ Beans, Frank the (Quarter) Tank, Frankfurter. Frank was rescued initially to be fostered by my sister, but once we got him home she realized she could never give him up. And so he is adopted, and is a cousin to Benson and Gibson, Sasha and Theodore, brother to Henry the Basset Hound (who is often featured here) and has two kitty-sisters, too (whom he has taken a strong liking to by the way).
Franklin has had a really rough life thus far. He is a former puppy mill stud dog, about five or six years old, (who was found wandering through Ohio’s Amish country) then taken to a pound by an Amish family with his mate and one of their offspring. A full-blooded Basset Hound, he only weighed about 38 pounds when the shelter picked him up. No one knows how long he had been on the run for, where he was getting food and water from, or how much in danger his life really was. He did have worms and was awfully dirty when they found him around Thanksgiving last year. We also don’t know exactly which mill he came from or why they kicked him out/let him loose.
Franklin was saved and then went to Ohio Basset Rescue, (OBR) a wonderful organization that needs your help to keep running. OBR fixed him, gave him tons of medicine, and then sent him to Broadway Kennels, outside of Columbus, Ohio, to await a new family. This is where he was united with us two Sundays ago (it’s taken me this long to get the pictures, sorry).
**Franklin needs all your purr-rayers and good thoughts as he is having a tough time getting used to the good life. He was absolutely terrified to go inside the house when we brought him home, he won’t play with a toy or take a boney, he barely ate for the first couple of days, and he’s all around skittish. He just doesn’t understand that no one is going to hurt him EVER again and that his little life is in great hands now. He’s having trouble trusting, as should be expected after what he went through at the puppy mill. **Please, can everyone send some messages of support our way for Franklin?
Here are some pictures of him and the day we rescued him.

OMG that face is precious. poor franklin. hopefully he will get used to the good life soon. that must be heartbreaking that he was afraid to go inside.

Franklin you are one handsome manwoofie! We know you are furry scared, but you are so furry lucky! Your life before was dreadful and no woofie should ever have to endure what you went through at the evil mill. You will take some time getting adjusted to easy living, but rest assured you are safe now and you have loving people who will take care of you and most importantly they will love you unconditionally.
Best of luck in your new forever home!

Oh my goodness, what a sweet looking face on him. Poor thing, thank God you rescued him. No dog should ever have to face the horror of a puppy mill. what a nice family you must have to take him in like that. bless you AND franklin.
He is so darn cute!!!
lost my last reply. We had a “baby”-Ginger. She was a red & white basset. Her parents were multi. We lost her a yr.ago in March to cancer. I am still
grieving. Having a 12 yr.old mini.dachshund that was given to us, we believe he had been abused as the tips of his ears had been frostbitten when he was young from being left outside. He would not come to anyone but me. He snarled at anyone even “Daddy”. It took awhile before he could hold. So Franklin, don’t lose hope. Try to learn to trust your new family. They chose you because they fell in love with that beautiful face, those pitiful eyes & that mournful sound you make. Give them a chance to show you that they have plenty of room in their heart for you. We also have Miss Brandi, she is 2 1/2yr.-her mama was a chihuahua & dad was a min.pincher. She is a beautiful little girl. All daddys girl. She hears him come home from work & she heads for the door & screams! YES, I said scream! These babies say to tell Franklin that all will be well in his world real soon because so many people are praying for him & his new family. GOD BLESS YOU! My kids asked if you would give him a kiss for them.?
He does have a face to fall in love with. It’s sad he had such a bad life before getting a real home.
Franklin: you are safe now and will be deeply loved. try to relax and take it all in. your beans will be takking good care of you furever!
Thank you for all of the kind words and thoughts for Frank!!! He is slowly adjusting to his new home, but we have realized it will take some time….Frank is loving his new basset hound brother, Henry and his kitties Big Al and Lily…He is finally eating his puppy chow and loves cheeseburgers too!!!
Jaime, you are a gem..thank you once again for this wonderful blog about Frank…and for all the support you give me, thru the bad and the good!!!
Mom and dad tell us that their 1st rescue dog, Bear, had beed abused by a woman (definitely NOT a lady). Old Bear Dog (OBD) would lay in the kitchen corner facing the wall whenever mom was in the room. It took a lot of patience, over an entire year, for OBD to warm up to mom and realize that he was living the good life. Then he decided to join the family instead of just living with them. Just give Franklin a lot of love and a little time; he’ll come around. There are no bad dogs; only bad people.

Franklin, you are safe now. you are in good hands and only good things will be coming your way from now on. you are such a sweetie in your pictures. just take it easy and know that no one will ever hurt you again.
Welcome home little guy, something tells me you are going to be very happy
Oh, dear little Frank:
I know it is tough to adjust to a furrefer home. Lots of us were out on the streets at one time, and we never really forget how bad it was. But it does fade a little with time. And with a wonderful family to care for you and love you, you will realize that there are those you can learn to trust. That’s a pretty big issue for rescued furthings. Trust. And home. And love. Hang in there!
What a sweetheart you are Franklin. I don’t know which is longer – your ears or your head… which only adds to your charm!
You have a beautiful little face with such soulful eyes. God Bless you, your beans, and all of your animal family. You have found your forever home my little friend.
We love the writing type.
