Prayers and Crossed Paws Needed
My dear friend Brian has a sick little puppy who needs our prayers and crossed paws right now. Please meet Zoe, an 8-month-old Golden Retriever.

Latest word on her condition: ”Still no word on the biopsy from stomach, intestines and lymphnode (lot’s of extra tissue in these places). Food is not passing through stomach to intestines. Kidneys are failing, red blood cells very low (Talking about transfusion). She is very sick.
She is currently at the animal hospital and has been since Saturday evening. She is still recovering from stomach surgery which they thought was from a blocked pylorus (which is the muscle that moves food from the stomach to the intestines). Turns out there was no blockage, but significant / excess tissue in her stomach, intestines and she had a enlarged lymph node. The new diagnosis (pending results) is complete kidney failure with high levels of toxins in her body which is causing the inflamed tissues. Due to the kidney failure, she is also anemic and they are discussing blood transfusions to potentially correct this issue. The vet is now thinking it is congenital and may not be something we can correct.”
Please everyone keep your paws crossed for my friend Brian’s dear sweet pooch. We know the power of the paws has gotten us through rough times before, and now Zoe really needs us.

I just wanted to take a quick second to thank you all for posting Zoe’s story and for all the prayers and well wishes. This is a true testament of how great people are, so thank you.
As of this afternoon, Zoe is making some progress, but has a very difficult road ahead of her. We are 95% certain that her kidney failure is due to congenital issues and now we need to see if we are able to maintain a quality of life for her since there really is no cure. Vet’s are discussing a complete blood transfusion due to how anemic she has become, but still are not sure if that will allow her to come home or not.
Regardless, we have some tough decisions ahead of us and we just want what’s best for Zoe. So we appreciate everyone keeping Zoe in their prayers….
Zoe’s Dad.
We just read Zoe’s update and it doesn’t sound good. We hope her family will be able to give her quality of life, but if not ….
For some reason her photo shows up in our Google Reader as 3 pugs in a cage.

Thank you all for all your prayers and well wishes. We can’t thank you enough. Here is the latest on Zoe….
We ended up bringing Zoe home on Wednesday night after the vet completed her blood transfusion. Due to her kidneys being under-developed, she has a very low red blood cell (RBC) count, which puts her at risk for being critically anemic. The blood transfusion was to help get her RBC’s back into normal range, which will hopefully provide her with a little bounce in her step. Since her kidney’s are so bad, she is not producing the right hormones that help produce the RBC’s, so we will be giving her weekly shots of epogen, which is a synthetic form of the hormone.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for her under-developed kidneys, so this is just a temporary solution. However, the vet has had a couple similar cases and the pets in those situations have been able to live a happy healthy life for a couple of years, until their bodies ultimately started rejecting the epogen and their kidneys failed. So we are definitely playing the odds here in hopes of keeping her around for as long as possible.
As of this morning, she seems to be recovering nicely. She has a little bounce in her step and is acting more like herself. However, she still has staples in her stomach due to the stomach surgery, so we need to keep her in check when she gets a little crazy!
Thanks again for everything and I will be sure to keep you all up to date on her progress.
