@Lisa - Thank you so much for the time you gave to this campaign as a volunteer. Please understand that the agreement reached between HSUS, Governor Strickland, and the Ohio Farm Bureau was not pre-planned; our organization had every intention of seeing this ballot initiative through to the end, whatever challenges lay ahead.

I understand your frustrations, especially in light of the concessions we had to make regarding the use of battery cages for egg-laying hens. However, we anticipate that this compromise will prevent a six-million-bird facility from being built in Union County. We also gained ground on a number of important issues; you can read the full agreement at http://www.scribd.com/doc/33774109/HSUS-Agreement.

We may or may not have prevailed in Ohio in this election, but we would have needed to raise at least $10 million to be competitive. Keep in mind that the option to pursue this campaign is preserved, as the signatures do not expire and can be used for subsequent elections. So there is a strong incentive for our opponents to uphold their end of the deal.

Thanks again for your dedication.

Hi Lisa,

Please review the second article -- I just replaced it as the first one was accidentally posted and was written by the agenda-driven CCF, who propagandizes animal welfare organizations and tells flat-out lies about their doings.

Thanks for reading!

I don't feel the agreement is not a win for the animals and I'm not alone in my feelings. I was disappointed that HSUS spent so much time having volunteers collect signatures and not tell them from the beginning that they would use them as leverage against the Ohio Farm Bureau to reach a compromise. I thought the Animal Law Coalition article was interesting and it worries me that the ban on dog auctions was removed from the puppy mill legislation supported by the HSUS and the governor. In my mind, that stinks.

Hey Jaime - Thanks for covering this compromise agreement. It's big news for us. You referenced the HumaneWatch website's analysis of this agreement; interestingly, the blog post that followed it takes a much different tone: http://humanewatch.org/index.php/site/post/one_day_wiser/. Have a very happy Fourth of July. :)
