Mini-Update and Our Friend Over the Bridge
Benson is home and resting as of about 6:30 last night. He is on some serious pain medication and some antibiotics to stave off infection. He has a six-inch gash on his lower belly where they opened him up and his whole belly and right side is shaved so he’s half-naked. Benson was okay when he came home, happy to see everyone and be back to his leather couch. The pain medication really knocks him out so he slept quietly most of the night. He did have the energy to beg at the dinner table so that’s good. We should have the pathology report tomorrow so we will know exactly which type of cancer we are dealing with here.
On another note, please everyone send your prayers over to Spencer’s family. Spencer lost his battle with cancer yesterday and the family is obviously devastated. We know everyone has really rallied around us and Benson the last few days, (and we thank you kindly) but if you could go send Spencer some kind words now, that would be really nice. Spencer was our good Golden friend. He was a very talented therapy dog who helped a lot of people. Now he is over the Bridge. Please say prayers for Spencer’s family. Below is our favorite picture of Spencer…
All this talk of cancer makes us wonder if Golden Retrievers are more prone to cancer. We lost a Golden to cancer in the 90′s, and Spencer’s family lost one to cancer, too. Does anyone know if Goldens are more prone to cancer?
Thanks everyone, Love Benson and Gibson

that is good news about Benson, i’m sure everyone is happy he is home.
My thoughts go out to Spencer’s family, we all know the pain of losing a loved one.
I have heard that golden’s are prone to cancer.
Give Benson (and Gibson and kitties!!) hugs and kisses

Hi! Both of my mommy’s rescued goldens died of cancer. The VET said then that they are more prone to it but no one really knew why. Now they say that it is because of lots of breeding in the 80s and 90s.
My beans rescued ours in 1989 and Sebastian passed in 03 and Comet in 05.
We will give our purrs to Spencer
That would be an interesting thing to look into … I don’t know if Golden’s are more prone to cancer, but I’ll do some googling and see what I can find out.
Hope Spencer left us peacefully. Glad Benson’s home.
Oh Jaime! I’m so sorry to hear that Benson has been diagnosed with cancer. My Bichon, Bailey, went through cancer surgery–at the time, I felt like I was living in an alternative dimension. Everything was surreal. I will keep Benson (and you!) in my prayers, and will keep watching your blog for more news. Stay positive and keep giving Benson all the love you can! They told me that Bailey would only live for 6 months. That was THREE YEARS AGO!!!
Sorry to hear about Spencer, we will ahve to go visit over there. we are glad that benson is resting nicely. keep us posted when you know what tupe of cancer it is and other details.
We visited Spencer’s family shortly after he died. We hadn’t known him long but we loved his blog
We hope Benson is doing okay.
Aw, I’m very sorry to hear about Benson’s battle. I’ve got lots of healing vibes swirling around our family for my dad, I’ll send a few anti-cancer swirls your way…
Much love,
Bogart
Princess, our black lad lost her battle yesterday, 4-11-09 with lung cancer. She was 12 years old.
We bought her home to her final resting place.
I am so lost right now. She gave unconditional love to me and my family.
This is my second lad that has died of cancer. The vet stated that lads are proned to cancer, she said when the time is right for me. She recommended a lad mixed breed.
To all pet owners that have lost a beloved best friend, part of the family, and your trusted oompanion. My heart goes out to you.
Benson has a beautiful, kind expression!
I love the pics. of Benson, what a beautiful, kind expression!
I love the pics of Benson! What a kind expression.
My dog went through radiation therapy and 4 surgeries due to cancer. She was given 2 weeks to live and lived 5 years after her initial surgery. I think goldens are definitely more prone to cancer than other dogs. You should have seen how many goldens were at the animal medical center due to cancer. I think it is faulty breeding or due to environmental factors. She ate high quality food and was very well cared for. She died last month and I miss her every day,but yes, I think goldens are suscepible to cancer.
