This sounds like a cool contest. Unfortunately, I don’t have a furbaby of my own at present, so I won’t be entering. There are lots of good adoption stories out there, though.

I have 2 dogs(1 adopted from the pound & 1 that was abandoned), 1 cat (found as a kitten and only has 3 paws), and a puppy we were fostering and couldn’t give up (foster-failure).

Let me tell you about our middle dog, Sasha. Someone brought Sasha into the police department where I work. They found her in their yard and she was barely 8 weeks old at the time. Far too little to have wandered away from somewhere. It was obvious she was dumped. I brought her home and took her to the vet the next day. It took very little effort to convince the family to keep her. My husband was smitten instantly (he’s got such a soft heart for animals, he was never allowed to have pets growing up). Sasha is a black shepherd mix and she’s, by far, the best dog I ever had. She picked up housebreaking from my oldest dog, Bo, and was fully trained within 2 weeks. Sasha doesn’t like cupboard doors open; whenever you leave a door open, Sasha will use her nose to close them. She does have some issues we assume came from whoever had her before we found her: Sasha doesn’t play with toys. We’ve tried just about every trick in the book to get her to play with a ball or a squeaky toy and she just won’t. Bo tries and in the five years we’ve had her, she’s never once picked up and played with any of the dog toys (and we have a ton). She’s also afraid of men except my husband, sons and father-in-law who she adores. She’s also afraid of being picked up. Sasha does love the snow and sometimes asks us to go outside just so she can bury her whole face in the snow. Sasha also has a heart of gold. I was watching my sister’s puppy for the day and Sasha had a peanut-butter bone she was chewing on under the table. The puppy laid down in front of Sasha and whined, putting her head on her paws. I watched Sasha roll that bone with her nose right to the puppy so she could chew Sasha’s bone. I had no idea dogs knew how to share.

It breaks my heart because I know someone wasn’t kind to Sasha before she came to us but I thank God every day she’s ours now.

  3. I raise pekingese and have 5. I love my dogs, and know that some people object to buying dogs instead of adopting.

I decided to go to a local no-kill shelter and rescue a dog to contribute to our household and join our family.

I asked to look at dogs that had been there awhile, weren’t puppies and were good with kids/other dogs- huge shoes to fill!

They pointed me in the direction of several, but the one I chose was a shepherd mix with the sweetest face and sad eyes. I had brought my daughter with me and he was gentle with her and very calm. He had been there for over a year and came when he was around 6 months old. I decided to give him a try.

We named him Aidan and he has been the best dog! He immediately trained himself to our doggy door with no accidents AT ALL. He is loyal to us and loves the kids. I recently had to have someone come fix the furnace and Aidan stood between the man and I the entire time as if he was protecting me. He is better behaved then all my pekes combined and I am so glad we rescued him. He is the only one allowed in the bedroom and he sleeps in my bed at night and waits for me to let him out when I get up in the morning.

I could not have picked a better dog!

Forever I wanted an animal! I grew up as an only child and it was pretty boring.

One day we went to the pound to take a look at cats- my father finalllly gave in after years of begging- shesh, guess it goes to show you that you gotta try!

Anyways we went into the back and began to look at cats.

There were two of them, Jello and Sprout. The family had to give them up becasue they were moving into a place where they couldn’t have cats.

    It was love.

Molly is a long hair maine coon cat. She was about 3, Sprout was 1. They looked up at me with there big eyes, and i knew they had to come home with me.

I was in 8th grade at the time- and just moved to a new town so I was so happy to get them! I spent my entire summer playing with them.

We renamed Jello to Molly and she became my best friend. Since I was at that weird preteen age, i’d fight with my parents alot. During fights sprout would run into the room and yell at us and run back out- like he was trying to tell us to shutup! haha, it was so funny- and always got us to stop fighting.

Molly was different though. She’d ALWAYS come find me when i was upset, i don’t know how’d she do it. She’d cheer me up- even lick tears off my face. At night she would beg to come in my room and crawl under my arms so i could hold her. She’d wake me up with nose kisses in the morning. She filled my life with such happiness.

Molly passed away a few years ago, but we still have sprout. He’s about 8 now, and becoming grey- but still playful and still funny. I live on my own now, and when i call home my mother makes me talk to him. She puts me on speaker and ill yell “kitty kitty kitty” and he yells at me- i know you think i might be weird that i’m saying yelling- but belive me, this old fella has some pipes on him. He’s actually got different meows for when he wants food, or to be pet.

Without these two little guys, my life wouldnt be as complete as it is today. I would love a gift card to by my little guy some fun toys and treats to keep him busy while my parents are at work. He’s give me alot, so whats a little something to give back?

    Thank you!

We used to live in a four-plex, way back when. One of our neighbors had this cat…she was a Siamese mix with one eye that slightly crossed named Tabby. She was semi-feral and wouldn’t let you pet her too much without scratching and biting, but she loved to come inside all of the neighbors apartments and make herself at home. One day the neighbor came by and told us they were moving and couldn’t take the cat with them. They wanted to know if we would take her…if not they were taking her to the pound. We didn’t really want a cat, but took her anyways to save her. She ended up being pregnant, as well. She ended up calming down and becoming a member of our family…we took her at about the same time our youngest son was born. That was about 15 years ago and sadly she just passed away in June 2008. It was so sad and broke our hearts, but we have so many loving memories or Tabby that she’ll always be with us!

THE DAY MY LIFE BEGAN ANEW

My name is Jack Dempsey but mom and dad call me Dempsey. I am 4 years old. I was rescued by my mom with the help of dad for a herion addict who was starving and abusing me. Mom said she didn’t care how much she had to pay to get me away from him. Money talks, At least that is what she said to dad. I tried but even with my supersensitive hearing I couldn’t hear it. If mommy say it it must be true.. Dad was a little reluctant as I was being adopted sight unseen. You see dad went out of town towork for the week end and mom went on a mission to save me. when dad returned home I won him over all it took was for me to get behind him on the couch and rest my head on his shoulder. He was hooked….. my little big sister Daisy-mae loves me and the cat what can i say about him, we are great friends, we play together all the time. I am gentle with him though because I am a lot bigger and I don’t want to hurt him. I was only sixty one puonds when I came home but mom has me healthy and happy now. My digestive system is very sensitive and I have to watch what I eat. I have gained weight and my hair is soft and shinny. I love my new family and plan on living a long healthy life.

    Regards Jack Dempsy.
