Kudos to Karl, Ed & More for Going Fur-Free

This article is re-posted from the Humane Society Legal Fund’s June issue:

“Karl Lagerfeld, head designer and creative director for Chanel, has long used fur in his high-end designs. The clothes unveiled during his March show in Paris seemed to be no exception, prompting an L.A. Times fashion critic to write that, “Lagerfeld’s compassion for the planet apparently does not extend to its four-legged inhabitants.”

OUCH.

Afterward, however, Lagerfeld revealed that ALL of the fur was synthetic, telling a reporter, “It’s the triumph of fake fur…because fake fur changed so much–and became so great now–that you can hardly see the difference…You cannot fake chic, but you can be chic and fake fur.”

By lending glamour and credibility to a fur-free collecction, Chanel is helping show that faux fur is luxurious — without the cruelty.”

Another designer I’d like to praise is actually one of my favorites — Ed Hardy. According to HSLF, he “was upset to find animal fur cropping up in products bearing his name and, with the support of The HSUS fur-free campaign, he advocated for the removal of animal fur from all future Ed Hardy products.”

His requests for a more humane products were successful as the licensee agreed “to stop using animal fur in any Ed Hardy brand product.” The licensee will not develop any new designs with animal fur. EVER.

**Other namely designers, like Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, JC Penney, and BCBG Max Azaria, Express and Limited Brands have also pledged to go faux-fur forever. :)

According to HSLF, the pitiless fur industry mistreats and kills more than 50 million animals a year. With many warm, chic alternatives available, there’s no reason to wear animal fur. More and more designers and retailers are making compassion their fashion, so check our list before you shop. For the list of fur-free brands, click below:

This is such an important issue that doesnt get enough talk-time. Kudos to YOU, JL, for letting everyone know what the heck is going on in the fur trade/fashion business. Im going to print that list and spread it to EVERYONE I KNOW.
Then Im going to write letters to companies NOT on the list and tell them to get with the program and that wearing fur is TOTALLY GROSS.
    Thanks for this GREAT UPDATE:)

Wow this is really surprising but I give SOME SERIOUS KUDOS — especially to a HUGE ass luxury brand like Chanel for going faux-fur.

Now if we could just get the stuipid celebrities like Beyonce from wearing fur — its NOT fashionable, its disgusting. Someone needs to tell their PR reps and personal stylists that. How about if we fwd THIS post to them…? Lol

Thanks for a GREAT POST JL, this is why you have one of THEE BEST pet blogs on the net. Theres alwayhs something to learn here, and there’s always something fun here too.

Cross BCBG Max Azria off the list. As of November 2011, rabbit fur is featuring fairly prominently in their holdiay collection. But we can change that:
