So I’m a sucker for a good mystery, whether it’s on 48 Hours, in a Dean Koontz novel, or elsewhere (even in my own life).

I’m also a sucker for a good book; at least 2 hours out of the day I have my nose in some type of book or newspaper or magazine.

And, as you all know, I’m a HUGE sucker for animals, and have the utmost respect for service dogs (of any type).

So reading Spencer Quinn’s 4th novel in the NYTimes Best-Selling mystery, Chet and Bernie series, “The Dog Who Knew Too Much” (Simon and Schuster) was like hitting the tri-fecta!!

I read it in like 5 days!

This book was written with panache, fun, intrigue, descriptive scenario, and with a sense of dedication to dogs (and children), mystery, and, what we all love — bringing down the bad guy. Quinn has an enormous gift of creating a situation and zeroing in on how and why his characters think, act, and react the way they do in life’s darkest times.

** And, let it be known, that Quinn’s novels featuring Bernie, a down-on-his-luck Private Investigator, and Chet, the super-intelligent search dog who calls him a partner, have garnered fans all over including the all-mighty Stephen King and the renowned Joyce Carol Oates.**

As “The Dog Who Knew Too Much” opens, the crime-solving team are attending a PI convention where Bernie hopes to make some much-needed cash by speaking, not his strong suit. The shifty PI who offered Bernie the gig offers him a lucrative job afterwards (working for his firm) and pressures him into selling “Chet the Jet” for a cool $10k… Bernie, horrified, turns him down flat.

Another job immediately pops up, as we soon learn to be a possible kidnapping (the team’s top skill). But what starts as a routine bodyguard stint quickly rolls into a desperate search for a young boy who’s gone missing on a wilderness camp’s journey into California’s Big Bear Mountains.

Has the boy wandered away? Did his estranged but dangerous father snatch him up? Is the mother who hired Bernie in on it?

All is answered in due time, but this book is written so that you are not so worried about it due to Chet’s ever-present outlook on the situation. Chet is the voice in this novel and Quinn’s idea of how a dog thinks and reacts is spot-on and absolutely charming, sometimes belly-laugh humorous because it’s so true but you could just never put it into words before! He perfectly describes the ADD in every dog, how quickly they change focus, how funny their little minds are, and how loving their big hearts are…

I think my favorite part of this book is how it so clearly illustrates for us how dedicated a dog is to his master… How the unconditional love, the partnership, the trust, the “just knowing each other so well,” etc. is so powerful that it’s heartening. Chet goes to great lengths for Bernie, and Bernie, who has been with Chet forever (I haven’t yet read the previous novels) just knows how to keep him calm, get him going, let him lead the way, let him make decisions, and trust his always-working, ever-powerful PI-search-dog-nose!

Some of my favorite “Chet-isms:”

- “Bernie has several throat-clearings; this one was about making a fresh start. I can clear my throat, too, but it doesn’t mean anything.”

- “… once on a case, details of which are all gone from my mind now–except for this–we found ourselves alone on a golf course and Bernie hit one a country mile, the longest kind of mile, I’m pretty sure. That was Bernie: just when you think he’s done amazing you, he amazes you again. Hard to believe I haven’t gotten that in already, but maybe I slipped up.”

- “Bernie opened the door, fast but quiet, yanked the xxx out of the car, and dragged him behind the bushes. Did I get in a nip or two along the way..? Possibly.”

- “…I got started on the rawhide slipper lace. It just so happened that I’d ended up with one of the xxx’s slippers, exactly how being a bit of a mystery.”

- “They were all looking at me for some reason. I wagged my tail, my go-to move, really, suitable for just about every occasion.”

Bernie and Chet’s Little Detective Agency is one I would hire any day.

I loved this book so much that I went Barnes and Noble last night after finishing it to buy another one. The Customer Service guy told me, “you are the third person tonight coming in looking for Spencer Quinn mysteries!” LOL!

Obviously, I’m, giving this a 10 out of 10, A+, etc.

So I hope you all go out and get “The Dog Who Knew Too Much.”

And don’t forget about the other books in the series: “To Fetch a Thief,” “Dog On It,” and “Thereby Hangs a Tail.”

So I received a brand spankin’ new FURminator for Sasha awhile back.

Let me tell you… this thing WORKS.

You all know that Sash-Kash has long black beautiful hair. Unfortunately, although it’s quite silky, her hair gets knotted and tangled like a classic Persian.  I have tried every single cat brush and comb you can imagine over the years… I have a collection of items that don’t work on her knots in the laundry room, taking up space actually. I was torn to pieces the day I had to put my trusty old Tabby Theodore to sleep in 2010. I remember it like it was yesterday; Monday February 8^th. He had cancer in his bile duct and the vet could only remove a certain length of the duct without harming him. He took as much as he could but the cancer spread. Theodore was doomed; he died less than two weeks from the first day I found out. But I’ve always been a believer in re-incarnation… and that’s important in this story.

I didn’t move from the chair I shared with Theodore for three days. I couldn’t go and pick up his ashes. I didn’t eat. I didn’t sleep. I was beside myself with grief – it was like I was watching this happen to someone else. Theodore had been with me since college, for 11 years. He was with me through the most trying times, through sickness, through break-ups, through deaths, through faltered friendships.

When I lost Theodore I knew I wouldn’t get over it. I stared at his pictures lying awake at night praying for some sense of reason to overcome my grief. Praying for some sense to be made where none could be found. To make matters worse, we lost our 10-yr-old Golden Retriever four days after Theodore – to cancer.

Little did I know that the same week that Theodore died, a helpless, teeny, large-eared, big-eyed, orange, devil-cat was brought into the world – albeit a different part of the city. But nonetheless, this cat had panache. He had personality. And he was born right around February 10^th, 2010.

He found my Mom in the slummiest part of downtown Cleveland – a grimy, dirty, dank, disgusting downtown Cleveland parking garage. But he had spunk. He played with cigarette butts and bottle caps. He palled around with a small black cat. He ate the food my Mom had brought for him. And one day, she asked my Dad if she could bring him home for me to cheer me up.

The day she showed up in the garage with the cat carrier, “Max,” as he was then called, hopped right in and laid down, purring away and wondering where he was off to.

She came home that day and called me outside. It was raining out and I wondered what she was doing. When I walked outside my heart jumped. Out popped this little orange wonder cat whose ears were so big I was afraid the gusty wind was going to take him away and we’d never see him again.

Max LOVES Boxes!

Max walked right up to me and started purring and rubbing and scratching his face on my feet.

This was all too familiar. I started to cry.

Theodore used to do that.

It was his trademark.

We brought Maxwell inside (new name “Maxwell Maximus) and he walked around like he owned the place. And he started to show behavior that was downright uncanny – uncanny because Theodore used to do the same things. He immediately went to the food cabinet and opened it with his front paw. He immediately came on to my lap and started eating Goldfish crackers – another Theodore favorite. He immediately cuddled up with me and lay down. Now this was about a six-month old kitten – a kitten that should be spending his time chasing dust bunnies, spying on chipmunks outside, taking naps in the windowsill, and tearing to pieces his catnip toys. But he preferred to loll away the hours by my side.

Maxy Sleeps Sitting Up Sometimes...

Maxwell one night took to sleeping with me, which was tricky territory because my other cat Sasha has always owned my bed. Max did not care one bit. And would you believe this…? Max curled up in the same exact spot where Theodore laid every single night, right in the crook of my knees. And he didn’t move the entire night.

Soon after Max started showing other Theodore-like behavior. I’m a smoker and when I go out to smoke through the garage, Theodore would wait for me on the counter in the laundry room so he could see me while I was outside. Soon Max starting doing this.  He would meow at me when I came in as if to say, “are you done now?”

Max started begging from me at the dinner table like Theodore used too, too. Never from my Mom or Dad, only from me.

And the icing on the cake… the way I hold Max. Theodore used to let me hold him so his belly was to my ear because I loved his motor-purr. Max, a wiley-6-month-old cat soon enough let me hold him the same way as Theodore so I could hear and be soothed by his motor.

Max also started following me around the house into weird places. When I type at the computer during the day, I have to pull up a chair for him to sit next to me so he can be touching me and resting his paws on me while I work.

And Max, like Theodore, seems to have a sixth sense. He knows when something is wrong with me. I suffer from a mental health disorder and Max just knows when it’s a bad day. And when that happens, he entertains me with his antics and he allows me to snuggle him until I’ve had my fill.

I know people think I sound crazy, but I KNOW THAT the week that Theodore passed away, he passed himself into the little body of another kitty to be brought to me. He was reincarnated; born into Max’s little soul. Theodore was trying to tell me that it will be okay. I don’t have to miss him anymore. He was trying to quell my dying spirit; he was letting me know that he would NEVER leave me.

And by the way, every now and then when I can’t sleep, I feel Theodore walking up and down the comforter cover around my body. And Max just looks up at him like he sees him, and tells him that it’s okay. He’s here now.

Big plans, big doings, lotsa learning and lotsa fun!

So everyone get geared up! Its going to be fantastic!

Of the thousands of shelters that operate in the United States, all are nonprofit agencies that often receive little funding for their overhead expenses. And because of the sheer number of animals that need care, these shelters survive mostly on volunteers and donations. One misconception is that donations are only given by rich, diamond-encrusted, private-jet travelling individuals. This isn’t true! I donate to shelters on a regular basis, and my jewelry is usually what my kids make me.

Here are five free or inexpensive things that you can give to your local shelters. No Cartier diamonds or private yachts needed!Excess household supplies. Scour your kitchen, linen closet, garage, and entire house for things that you might be in excess of. Shelters always need blankets, towels, and sheets that puppies and kittens and sick animals need for comfort. If you discover that you have enough cleaning materials (e.g. cleaning solutions, mops, buckets, etc) to last you for quite a while, donate all the excess you have to the

shelters. You can even make a habit of buying one extra bottle of Windex and other cleaning materials each time you do the grocery and donate these to the shelter. Because of the hundreds of animals that they often house, shelters never run out of a need for cleaning supplies.

Other things they might need are hardware supplies to maintain the premises. This can range from anything from light bulbs to wheelbarrows.Pet supplies from discount stores. Shelters are always in need of pet toys and supplies. Pets love to play. With the large number of animals housed in shelters every year, pet toys are almost always chewed to nothingness and many other pet supplies run out or get worn out. You can go out and buy teething toys, rubber balls, leashes, collars, pet food, and countless other pet supplies in bulk from discount toys and make many shelter pets very happy.

Pet food or supplies coupons
If you can’t donate pet food or supplies, another thing you can do is be on the look-out for coupons for these things, cut them out, and bring them to your local animal shelter before the offers expire. If you are financially willing and able, go out and use these discounts and promos yourself, then bring the goodies to the shelter!

Pet medications
If you are no longer in need of pet medications, find out if your local shelter will be able to accept these partially used medications. Additionally, you can also ask local veterinarians or even big pharmaceutical companies for some medicine samples that they normally give out for free anyway.

Time
The cheapest thing you can give to pet shelters is your time! You can spend weekends just playing with the animals, most of which are starved for human interaction. You can also help out by filing, stamping envelopes, tidying up the shelter office, cleaning the cages, and doing many other tasks in the shelter that is volunteer-driven.For the more ambitious volunteers, you can also sponsor fund-raising drives to raise money for local shelters; run donation-drives where you can round up friends and family to go door to door and ask for the items on this list; or even help shelters by applying for grants and asking pharmaceutical companies for free medicines in their behalf. If you’re a vet, you can also help out by lending your time and expertise for free to the sick pets and those that need to be neutered.

Not a lot of time on your hands? You can even help out your local shelter by simply sitting in front of your computer! Go to sites like The Giving Effect or The Animal Rescue Site where you can click to donate food to animal shelters or vote for your local animal rescue shelter to receive a grant!

Big or small, anything that you give to these shelters will be appreciated by the shelter staff and especially by animal friends who are going to be more than willing to show their heartfelt thanks the next time you drop by.
