So you’ve had a terrible day. Your car broke down, your company did layoffs, you lost your wallet, and you’re now coming down with a cold. You get home, unlock the door, and you’re greeted by a wagging tail, sloppy kisses, and some kitty-cat rub-downs. What better medicine is there than that?
Most pet owners don’t need to be told the benefits of pet ownership. We know we get unconditional love, frequent amusement, and undying adoration from our pets. We know they help us feel better after a bad day. They are our constant companions. But there are also some unseen benefits of pet ownership. For example, did you know that owning a pet can actually be good for you? That petting a cat or dog can reduce your blood pressure?

Here is a list of the benefits of pet ownership, taken from Second Chance for Animals and other sources:
1. Pet owners have lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels and in general, this puts them at a reduced risk for heart disease.
2. Pet owners report fewer headaches, fewer bouts of indigestion and less difficulty sleeping.
3. Dog owners in particular, exercise more, though you can certainly get exercise playing with an energetic cat or kitten.
4. Pets help safeguard against depression or loneliness.
5. Pets actually help improve social skills.
6. For children, owing a pet improves their self esteem – someone who loves them unconditionally and wants their undivided attention.
7. Pets reduce the number of visits to a doctor by elderly patients.
8. Pets help to ease loss. An older person whose spouse has died is less likely to experience deterioration in health if he or she is attached to a pet.

According to Swedish.org, “Researchers have observed that older adults who own pets are less likely to use physician services unnecessarily. Other research has suggested that owning a dog can reduce the impact of stresses encountered in day-to-day life. In addition, studies have found that pets in the workplace are perceived to relieve employee stress, make the environment friendlier, provide a pleasant diversion from work, and provide companionship. These benefits may even be passed on to customers who encounter pets in businesses, giving a favorable impression of a company and fostering social interaction.”
That study also found these benefits of having a pet to be true:
- Pets provide companionship and pleasurable activity
- They facilitate exercise, play, and laughter
- We have something to care for and a source of consistency
- They allow a feeling of security
- They are a comfort to touch and a pleasure to watch
- They provide a link with reality to enhance emotional stability
- Become a receptive partner in a relationship of mutual trust that promotes self-awareness
- They provide nonjudgmental acceptance and love
- They offer an improved sense of well-being
So there really is a lot more to owning a pet than meets the eye. Consider these facts if you or someone you know is thinking about adopting a pet soon. I know having pets is one of the best decisions I ever made, and I am grateful for my animals every day.
